This Modern Tales Course day exposes the elemental truths of great performance. From the writing on the page through to casting and preparing your actors, the entire storytelling process is reliant on a deep understanding of character and performance. For every member of the storytelling team, knowledge of the work of the actor, the choice of actor and the definition of a story’s meaning through performance, is essential.

World class casting director Leo Davis will be joining us and we will be questioning her about her inspirational role working with A list through to unknowns and her unerring ability to discover new talent. British actors Nabil Elouahabi and Nathaniel Martello White will be helping lead an afternoon’s workshop in getting the best out of the text and demonstrating different ways to interrogate its meaning, under the guidance of directors Nirpal Bhogal. and Gillies MacKinnon.

The day will begin with a session on how to write to inspire great performances. The focus will be on exploring story and subtext and how character work is not simply carried through their actions but through a broader range of techniques that are employed in good screenwriting.

The second session of the day brings us Leo Davies, the renowned casting director in conversation with one of the founders of Modern Tales. In the afternoon the participants will experience a workshop with British actors Nabil and Nat, discussing alongside RADA mentor Beru Tessema, on how actors can be best supported and their best work delivered when doing rehearsals and on set. The rest of the day is devoted to the participants both observing and engaging with the actors doing live work on texts with the guidance of the directors. Each text will be broken down and rehearsed, allowing the participants to access a much deeper conversation about story and performance that engages with the film’s meaning and the characters’ journey.
